19세기 후반 그 당대에는, 기존 사회의 관습과 규범에 도전했다는 이유로 폄훼되었던 작가이다. 그녀가 살았던 시기는 새로운 세기가 도래하는 무렵이었고, 청교도 윤리를 정신적 지주로 삼았던 미국 사회는 20세기의 불확실한 시작에 직면하여 두려움을 느끼고 그녀를 철저히 배척했다. 특히 '여성의 자아'를 작품 주제로 해서, 한 여성이 온전한 인간으로 성장하는 과정을 그린 소설 'The Awakening'은 미국 문학사에서 여성의 자주적인 삶을 진지하게 탐구한 최초의 소설로, 동시대의 여느 사람들을 앞서는 통찰력 있는 의식을 제시한다. 그렇기 때문에 20세기 후반에 이르러 작가 케이트 쇼팽이 페미니즘의 선구자로 부각되면서 재조명되고 있다. 주요 작품으로는, 1890년에 처음 발표한 'At Fault'와 1894년과 1897년에 각각 발표한 단편 소설집인 'Bayou folk', 'A Night in Acadia'가 있으며, 1901년 'The Wood Choppers', 1902년에 출간한 마지막 소설 'Polly'가 있다
